The purpose of the Mark T. MacMillan Memorial Scholarship is to promote and recognize outstanding undergraduate research in any area of marine biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. It is an annual prize to outstanding undergraduate students of marine biology in recognition of their exceptional research participation, senior thesis, or equivalent achievement.

Amount & use
Award amount: up to five $4,000 awards
How the funds may be used: the recipient may use the award for any purpose (e.g., field supplies or lab materials for research, field quarter course fees or travel, conference travel, housing).
  • Any undergraduate student studying marine biology may apply
  • Applicants may be at any stage in their undergraduate training
  • Recipients must be in good standing in their department
  • Applicants must be an intended or declared marine biology major
  • Applicants must demonstrate intent to complete a marine biology degree
  • For top candidates being considered for this award, the review committee will contact the student’s PI or Faculty Sponsor as indicated on their application for a reference
