The purpose of the Rebecca and Steve Sooy Graduate Fellowship is to celebrate and continue the Sooy’s long commitment to the understanding and conservation of the Northern Elephant Seal, by encouraging and supporting scholarship on marine mammals. Any graduate student studying marine mammal species may apply. Applicants may be at any stage in their graduate training, but they must be in good standing in their department. This fellowship is awarded annually. Sooy Fellows may reapply for the Sooy Graduate Fellowship in subsequent years after being awarded the Fellowship for the first time; Sooy Fellows will not be the awarded this fellowship more than three times. The amount of the award varies and may cover up to a full GSR for one quarter, which may be split between multiple students. The recipient may use the award for any purpose (e.g. educational fees, housing, conference travel, field research support, etc.).

Eligibility
All UCSC graduate students studying marine mammals are encouraged to apply. Students are eligible to apply at any point in their graduate career, however preference may be given to more
senior students further along in their studies and focusing on data collection and analysis.
