A founding science faculty member, Bob helped make UC Santa Cruz a science powerhouse and a supportive incubator of student excellence. Jan and Bob were community builders, welcoming students and colleagues into their home and providing mentoring and engagement for generations of scientists. The annual Garrison award recognizes outstanding Ocean Sciences graduate students who have shown exceptional scholarship, teaching and mentoring, and service to their community. At UC Santa Cruz, we take the idea of graduating well-rounded scientists seriously. The Bob and Jan Garrison Outstanding Ocean Science Student Award will provide students with public recognition that helps them take the next step in their career and with critical funding to help them live in Santa Cruz. Further, it elevates the idea that being a successful scientist is more than the science you do; it’s also about making humanitarian contributions to the community.
